THE ORIGIN OF THE PROJECT
At the crossroads of classical heritage, art, and new technologies, a slightly crazy dream was born in the halls of Sorbonne University: to dive into 17th-century France through the pen of its greatest playwright, Molière.
What masterpiece might Molière have written if he hadn’t died in February 1673? Can artists, researchers, and cutting-edge generative AI technologies come together to answer that question?
The team

Founded in 2017 by Georges Forestier, the Théâtre Molière Sorbonne aims to revive the ancient techniques of 17th-century declamation and acting. A true workshop-school, it is open to the entire Sorbonne University student community and allows the public to rediscover the theatrical works of Molière, Corneille, and Racine as they were performed in their time.
The Théâtre Molière Sorbonne performs at Sorbonne as well as on prestigious stages in France (Opéra Royal du Château de Versailles, Théâtre Montansier, Théâtre de la Ville, Le Phénix – scène nationale de Valenciennes…), and abroad (Florence, Madrid, Abu Dhabi).
Obvious is a French trio of artists and researchers who use artificial intelligence algorithms to create works of art. Their creations, at the crossroads of classical art and the latest technologies, have been exhibited in the world’s leading museums. They are represented by the Danysz Gallery in Paris.
Through their work and collaborations (Nike, Alpine, Opéra de Paris), Obvious aims to make research tools accessible to creators across all fields in order to initiate the next visual and artistic revolution.
In 2023, Obvious launched a research lab in artificial intelligence in partnership with Sorbonne University, to develop new algorithms dedicated to artistic creation and to make them available in open source.
Sorbonne University is a multidisciplinary research-intensive university comprising three faculties: Arts, Health, and Science & Engineering.
